What is a Community Foundation?
Community foundations are locally-run, non-government public foundations that build and manage endowment funds to support charitable activities in their area and provide community leadership through strategic grant making and project initiatives. Each community foundation is autonomous and governed by a volunteer board of local leaders.
How large is the community foundation movement?
There are more than 1,100 community foundations in 42 countries. Canada is a recognized leader in this growing global movement, with 170+ community foundations and combined assets of close to $3 billion. The largest gift is the $100 million Moffat family donation to the Winnipeg Community Foundation and the largest community foundation is the Vancouver Foundation with over $830 million in assets.
